THE EPISCOPAL DIOCESE OF MICHIGAN

The Episcopal Diocese of Michigan is part of the United States
Episcopal Church, which in turn is part of the worldwide Anglican
community.  The Diocese of Michigan was originally organized in
1832 and served the entire state.  Today, Michigan is divided into
four Dioceses.  The original Diocese of Michigan serves the Detroit
Metropolitan Area and adjacent regions as far west of Lansing,
Jackson, and Hillside.  This is Nativity’s Diocese.  The other three are
the Dioceses of Western Michigan, Northern Michigan, and Eastern
Michigan.

Today, the Right Reverend Wendell Gibbs serves as the 10th Bishop
of the Diocese of Michigan.

The goals of the Diocese have changed over time, as the current
events and pressing issues facing Michigan have changed.  Today,
the Diocese of Michigan’s Mission and  Ministry focuses on 5 priorities:

Justice, Peace and Diversity
Reach out to the dispossessed, imprisoned, and otherwise
voiceless but in need.

Leadership Development
Provide opportunities and models for celebrating successes –
sharing best practices, tools and common concerns.

Revitalizing and Transforming Congregations
Help our diocese and communities of faith to grow and develop
both in health and membership.

Youth and Young Adults
Include and encourage full incorporation of youth and young
adults in the thinking, work, worship and structure of the Church.

Episcopal / Anglican Identity
Develop a deeper understanding of our foundational beliefs, our
Anglican heritage and our American Episcopal Church’s structure, roles
and responsibilities.
