OUTREACH AT NATIVITY
Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit; and there
are varieties of service, but the same Lord; and there are
varieties of activities, but it is the same God who activates all of
them in everyone. To each is given the manifestation of the
Spirit for the common good. — 1 Corinthians 12.4-7
Outreach has a special place at Nativity. We are a community
committed to looking after the needs of those less fortunate than
ourselves. Outreach is our best funded committee. Nativity sets
aside a percentage of our operating budget each year for Outreach,
and in lean years, we have struggled to avoid cutting funds to this
core ministry. The Outreach Committee’s endeavors have taken
different forms over the years as the committee and community have
changed. Today, our Outreach Committee leads our community in
working to aid organizations such as:
Emmanuel Community House, Detroit, Michigan. A small but
vital neighborhood organization committed to helping local families.
Their programs include Bible Study, Family Night, Focus Hope for
Seniors, Food Distribution, Life Skills, Mentoring, Summer Leadership
Program, and Tutoring. Nativity offers EC regular donations, as well
as financial and volunteer support. We also assist with food
distribution and an Adopt-a-Family program at Thanksgiving and
Christmas.
SOS, Oakland County. The South Oakland Shelter provides
temporary shelter and support programs to help homeless individuals
and families break free from the cycle of homelessness and live
independently. Nativity supports this program by hosting the
homeless at our church for a week each year. Our community comes
together to provide food, shelter, and transportation.
Crossroads Soup Kitchen, Detroit, Michigan. Crossroads cares
for any person in need by providing counseling, advocacy, and
material assistance when possible. Each Sunday afternoon,
Crossroads serves a hot meal to all who come. Teams from parishes
and service organizations throughout the metro Detroit area host the
Soup Kitchen.
