jdempz@nativityepiscopalchurch.org

The Reverend Dr. Julia A. Dempz is the rector of Nativity Episcopal Church. Dr. Dempz received a Masters of Divinity from the University of Toronto, Trinity College, Faculty of Divinity and a Doctor of Ministry degree from the Ecumenical Theological Seminary of Detroit. Through the Ecumenical Theological Seminary she mentors a Sustaining Pastoral Excellence group of metropolitan Detroit pastors. She also serves on the seminary's board. She has served churches in the area for 18 years first at St. James Episcopal Church in Birmingham and later at Christ Church Grosse Pointe. She served on the board of the Lay Theological Academy in Grosse Pointe, and the board of the Whitaker School of Theology. While at Christ Church Grosse Pointe she was on the Construction Over-Site Committee for a multi-million dollar addition of an education wing. Her focus of ministry there was education for children, youth and adults. While at Christ Church she began the Center for Spirituality an education outreach ministry within the community.

For ten years prior to ministry within the church Dr. Dempz worked in hospice care. She was a founding board member of the Hospice of South Berkshire in Great Barrington, Massachusetts and coordinator of the Volunteer and Bereavement service for Cottage Hospice in Grosse Pointe. She lectured nationally and served on the Michigan Hospice Organization Board. She leads retreats throughout the country on spirituality and faith and is the co-author of Project FaithWorks, a bible and arts based curriculum for youth and adults. She is Past-President of Standing Committee for the Diocese of Michigan, served on the Board of the Michigan Coalition for Human Rights and was an alternate delegate to General Convention in 2006. She is married to Charles Dempz. They have three grown children.

Since coming to Nativity, Dr. Dempz has implemented a new educational program for our youth and a summer Vacation Bible School for children. She is passionate about worship, the arts and seeks ways to draw us into deep and transforming spiritual journeys. A labyrinth has been built on the grounds of Nativity that she hopes will continue to draw the spiritually hungry into our parish. A natural outpouring of deepening spiritual growth is the desire to reach out to others as the hands of Christ in this new century. With this commitment to those in need Nativity is thriving and growing.
