Why does someone seek asylum in the United States? For many, it is to flee danger, persecution, and torture in their country of origin. TASSC (Torture Abolition and Survivor Support Coalition) works to prevent torture around the world and to support those who have survived it. Understanding the physical, emotional, and spiritual impact of torture helps us better understand the need for asylum and the care many migrants and asylum seekers require.
In partnership with TASSC, Nativity Episcopal Church, University of Detroit Mercy, and Freedom House Detroit will host four events October 9–11 exploring the experiences of torture survivors, human rights, asylum, and the journey toward healing.
Truth Tellers: Understanding Torture

Aymen Tabir, TASSC President, and Sara Bauman, CRNA, TASSC Board Member and U of D Mercy graduate, will discuss TASSC and the realities faced by torture survivors.
Beyond Survival

Hear directly from TASSC survivors and leaders, with legal insights from Andrew F. Moore of University of Detroit Mercy Law School. The program will explore the experiences and holistic needs of the 1.3 million torture survivors in the United States, along with the international legal framework surrounding human rights and opposition to torture.
The Golden Thread: Weaving Survivor Voices Across Time

An evening of art, music, and survivor voices hosted by TASSC and Freedom House Detroit, celebrating their work and raising funds to support their ministries. A donation of $45 is appreciated. Truth Tellers: Survivor Stories

Former hostage of the Russian regime Paul Whalen will join TASSC and Sister Sue Sattler, IHM, to share his experience of nearly six years in captivity and discuss the phenomenon of hostage diplomacy.
We hope you will join us for one or more of these opportunities to listen, learn, and better understand the experiences of survivors of torture and those seeking safety in our communities.
